Grandpa T.

I was thinking about my grandpa Tovey this morning and thought I would post one of his favorite poems that he can recite from memory. I can hear his voice when I read it:

Prayer and Potatoes By: John Tyler Pettee

An old lady sat in her old arm-chair

With wrinkled face and disheveled hair

And pale and hunger-worn features;

For days and for weeks, her only fare

As she sat in her old arm-chair,

Had been nothing but potatoes.

But now they were gone, of bad and of good.

Not one was left for the old lady's food.

Of these her stock of potatoes.

She sighed and said, "What will I do? Where shall I send?

To whom shall I go, to get some more potatoes?"

She thought of the deacon over the way.

The deacon so ready to worship and pray,

Whose cellar was full of potatoes.

She said, "I will send for the deacon to come.

He'll not mind to give me some of

Such a store of potatoes."

The deacon came over as fast as he could,

Thinking to do the old lady some good;

But never thought once of potatoes.

He asked her directly to tell her chief want,

And she, simple soul, expecting a grant,

Immediately answered, "Potatoes".

But the deacon's religion went not that way.

He was more accustomed to preach and to pray,

Than to give of his hoarded potatoes.

So not hearing, of course, what the old lady said,

He rose to pray with uncovered head.

She only thought of potatoes.

He prayed for patience, for wisdom, for grace,

But when he prayed, "Oh Lord, give her peace".

She audibly sighed, "Give potatoes".

At the end of each prayer that he said,

He heard, or thought that he heard, in its stead,

The same request for potatoes.

The deacon was troubled - he knew not what to do.

T'was embarrassing, very, to have her act so

About those 'carnal potatoes'.

So ending his prayer, he started for home.

As the door closed behind him, he heard a deep groan.

"Oh give to the hungry, potatoes".

And that groan followed him all the way home,

In the midst of the night it haunted his room.

"Oh give to the hungry, potatoes".

He could bear it no long--he arose and dressed.

From his well-filled cellar taking in haste

A bag of his best potatoes.

Again, he went to the widow's lone hut.

Her sleepless eyes she had not yet shut.

But there she sat in her old arm-chair,

With the same wan features, the same said air.

So entering in he poured on the floor

A bushel or more of his goodly store

Of the very best potatoes.

The widow's heart leaped up for joy,

Her face was haggard and wan no more.

"Now", said the deacon, "Shall we pray?"

"Yes" said the widow, "Now you may".

And he kneeled on the sanded floor

Where he had poured out his goodly store.

Such a prayer the deacon prayed.

As never before his lips essayed.

No longer embarrassed but free and full.

He poured out the voice of a liberal soul.

And the widow responded with a loud "Amen".

And said no more of potatoes.

Would you who hear this simple tale,

Pray for the poor and praying prevail.

Then preface your prayers with alms and good deeds.

Search out the poor with their cares and their deeds.

Pray for peace and grace and Heavenly food.

Pray for wisdom and guidance, for these are all good.

But don't forget the potatoes.

It's just not the same until you've heard it in his lilted southern Idaho accent. His voice has a way of making everything sound more pleasant.

What reminds you of your grandfather?

Cute hair and a new attitude

As I wrote in my last post, Kendle was the recipient of a fabulous new haircut on Saturday. Here is a picture I took of her this morning before she left for school:

She loves her shorter new style and I'm looking forward to the low maintenance after all of the french braiding, wispy pony tails, and snarls we've been dealing with for the last couple of years. This picture from last summer was her hair at it's longest:

The new hair cut has inspired a new attitude I've noticed as well. A sassier, spunkier, girlier (is that a word?) version of Kendle is coming out. That's good and bad. We don't really need any more sassy or spunky. That girl has enough of those traits to last her a life time. But it's cute to see her take an interest in her appearance and start wanting to fix her own hair. Or maybe that's not such a good thing?

At any rate, I'm glad it was a positive experience for her because I have to admit as I saw those long locks of pretty hair falling to the ground I was having second thoughts and started to feel slightly sick.

Now I'm debating wether to chop off my locks or not for the upcoming warm weather. Decisions, decisions.

What a weekend

I really didn't get all of the things done this weekend that I had wanted too. Sometimes unexpected things come up and you roll with it. That's how life goes.

Friday night Riley and I wanted to go shopping and my mother-in-law had offered to watch our kiddos. Only problem was that she was also watching my little nephew who is barely two months old and I did not think it was a good idea to have my sick kids cough and hack and wipe their runny little noses all over the little guy. So we think "family outing", no problem. This will be fun!

Uh, no. We couldn't have been more wrong. For all of you mom's who are able to take your kids shopping with you all of the time, I highly commend you and you have my sincere admiration. Myself, I avoid it all costs. Friday night was a perfect example of why.

Our first stop was at Target. I start to have Target withdrawals if I've been away too long. In this case I had, and I wanted to be able to really look around since I hadn't been there in a while. Riley was humoring me pretty well, (that usually means there's something he wants to buy) and I'm bopping around. A cute bag for me here, a treat for Kendle there, everyone's happy. For a whole ten minutes. Then Kendle starts in with her smoothie campaign. "I want a smoothie!" She keeps repeating it over and over again, telling us how HUNGRY she is and she wants one SO bad. We keep telling her they don't have those here and we finally lose patience since we know we still have another store to go to and decide to go ahead and check-out. We get to the check-out line and she sees the slushy machine and decides that's what she really wanted. Not a smoothie, but a slushy. We tell her not this time, but we will go drive through McDonald's and get her a milkshake and something to eat since she's claiming to be SO HUNGRY. We hurry over to the McDonald's and pull up to the drive through and all of sudden she decides she doesn't want a milkshake with her happy meal. Just water. I'm exasperated at this point, but we get her a bottle of water with her food and off we go. She took two sips of the water and then said she wasn't hungry. Me and Riley just look at each other, you know that look where you both want to just scream but you're determined not to lose your patience.

Our next stop was Kohl's. They were having some really good sales that I wanted to take advantage of. We put Morgan in a litle stroller and off we go. Five minutes into the store he starts crying and whining and doing his pathetic little faces. I dig out a little treat from my purse for him and that keeps him happy for a few more minutes. Until he lost it amid all of the racks of clothing. So to keep him happy I have to keep pushing the stroller or doing the stand in place moving the stroller back and forth move while I try to look through the sales racks. That's multi-tasking at it's best. Riley and Kendle have disappeared, but I can't say I'm too dissapointed about that since it's two less people following me around. A little while later Riley throws a shirt in the cart and tells me he will just take the kids out to the car while I finish my shopping. I think he was embarrassed that he could hear our baby crying throughout the whole store. I finished up my shopping, but I hate to feel rushed and like I didn't get to check everything out. The highlight of the night was picking up Olive Garden to go and then heading home to put the kiddie's to bed and watch a movie. I was exhuasted!

Saturday morning Riley had to leave early and go unload equipment for their soccer team. They start practices and tryouts this week and it's going to start getting kind of crazy around our house. Can't wait for that. I had been promising Kendle that we would get her hair cut, so as soon as Riley got home we left to do that. Her hair looks really cute and I'll have to post some pictures tomorrow. I think it makes her look so much older. This was her first big hair cut and the lady cutting her hair was trying to talk me out of it because she has such pretty hair, but Kendle wanted it short and I think it will be a nice change. She loves it.

My aunt and uncle from Moses Lake called and said they were at the Home and Garden show over at the TRAC and wanted to stop by on their way back home. So we frantically cleaned the house because it looked like a tornado had come through and enjoyed a good long visit with them later in the afternoon. This particular aunt was in high school when I was about Kendle's age and would fix my hair and do my makeup and I always thought she was so fun. I'm glad they gave us a call.

Yesterday was our ward conference and it was enjoyable to listen to our Bishop and our Stake Presidency speak to us (even if I was out in the foyer with a loud wiggly baby the majority of the time). They are some great men and gave us some very good council and inspiration. In primary Kendle got to give the opening prayer and it made me happy to see that she doesn't need help from mom anymore and that she has such a sweet little testimony of the gospel. She loves primary.

By 8:30 last night when we had put the kids to bed, I was feeling like we needed another weekend just to relax and play catch up. I'm sure most of you feel the same way. Maybe next weekend......

*I guess I'm not the only one who had a wild weekend. Ha,ha.

The Tagging continues

*Thanks to everyone who commented on my post yesterday. It was really fun to hear from everyone on that topic and to get some good suggestions.*

And now, let the fun facts begin:

What was I doing 10 years ago...
10 years ago I was getting ready to finish my senior year of high school and have the best softball season ever. Life was good.

I was ready to get out of the small town I lived in and have some adventures.

5 Things on my to-do list today:

Exercise
Tidy up the house
Cuddle my sick baby
Start a couple loads of laundry
Try to get some reading done on my huge book (The Pillars of the Earth)

Snacks that I enjoy:
Chips and dip
Caramel corn
Chocolate covered Oreo's that I put in the freezer
cheese and crackers
granola bars
(can you tell I'm a carb addict or what?!)

What I would do if I became a millionaire:
Pay off home, car, piano and save and invest a substantial amount
Sock away my kids college funds
Build our dream home out in the country, complete with a mini golf course for Riley
Take a whirlwind adventure vacation
Build a top notch, fun and loving facility that would house displaced children that have no where to go.

Three bad habits:
Staying up too late reading
Not folding laundry after it comes out of the dryer
Eating too much and then thinking I can exercise it away! Ha, if only that were true.

5 Places that I have lived:
Irrigon, OR
Corvallis, OR
Kennewick, WA
Burbank, WA
Pasco, WA

5 Jobs that I have had:
Hotel Housekeeping
Agricultural lab tech
Nanny

5 Things that people do not know about me:
I can't whistle
I can only snap my fingers with my left hand
My name spelled backwards is Haras Nosdod
When I was in high school I could do better diamond push-ups than all of the guys in my weight training class.
I would love to have the job of reading books and deciding if they would make a good movie or not.

There you have it, everything you've always wanted to know about me and more!!!!

Beauty Product Rehab

I've been going through my make-up and beauty products and tossing out all of the stuff I don't use or that doesn't look good on me. It feels good to get rid of all of the excess and shop for some updated new items. Do you ever get to the point where you feel like you've been doing your make-up the same for the last ten years? My skin has changed so much since having children that I've had to switch things up a bit and let go of some of my old favorites. I'm no beauty expert by any means, but I thought I would share three of my most loved items that I have to have in my make-up bag.

#1 Radiance Boost Eye Cream from Neutrogena

After having a baby and having lots of late nights, my eyes seem to have permanent dark circles and puffiness. I dab some of this on and I can tell a big difference. Plus it helps keep my eye area soft since mine tend to get kind of dry this time of year.

#2 On-the-Spot Acne Treatment from Neutrogena

This stuff is like a miracle in a tube for me. I wish I was one of those lucky people who have perfect skin and never endure a blemish, but that is just not the case.

#3 C.O. Bigelow Mentha Lip Shine in Cinnamint

This is my all-time favorite lip gloss. I love the way it looks and it actually makes your breath a little fresher at the same time. I buy it from Bath and Body Works. LOVE IT!!!

I would love to know what beauty products you love and would reccommend: skin products, make-up, tools - whatever it is that you think are great. *Especially if there is a foundation product that you like, I am having the hardest time finding one that blends with my skin tone.*

Bogie, that rascall

I have not mentioned much about our dog Bogie on my blog. He is a chocolate lab and a good pet for the most part. When he's not digging stuff up or tearing things apart that is. *For the record, I am not really a pet person. Especially where big dogs are concerned.* But we've had him since he was a little puppy (boy those cute little puppies sure are deceiving) and he's become part of the family. Riley has trained him to be his hunting companion and he's really good at that. There is something about this dog that is strangely human at times. For example, on occasion he looks like he's actually smiling at you. But this picture I've posted below cracked our family up to no end. What a silly dog. Riley just happened to glance out of the window in Morgan's bedroom and had to run and get the camera to capture this: (sorry they are taken through the window, so the quality is not very good)

This winter Riley bought Bogie an old blanket to sleep with in his little house inside the kennel and as you can see, he had started to tear and shred it up. But I guess he decided it was too cold and he needed it after all.

Oh, that Dog.

A case of the sniffles

It's a good thing that today is President's Day and there isn't any school because over the weekend my children seemed to have caught a bit of that bad cold going around. Morgan's little nose has been so runny, but at least he's not coughing yet. Kendle is hacking up a storm and hasn't been able to get very much sleep, which translates into me not getting hardly any sleep. Oh, the joys of motherhood.

It was so nice to reconnect and just spend quality time together. It really was a near perfect day. He is a good man for doing so many nice things for me and making sure I knew that I'm still his special Valentine.

Happy Valentine's Day

Part of me wants to say that Valentine's Day is highly overrated, but every year I get my hopes up that this will be the year that my hubby will actually plan something. He informed me last night that he's taking me somewhere this afternoon and it's a suprise. Hmm...................................
what could it be?

Wether you have big plans or not, tell your sweetie how much you love them and appreciate them.

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY!

Romantic Movie Quotes

I love Valentine's Day. The thought of people all over the world celebrating the one's they love, makes me happy. In honor of such a sweet holiday, I decided to post some of my favorite movie quotes. And if you don't have any plans yet for Valentine's Day, consider renting one of these flicks:

A Beautiful Mind:"It's only in the mysterious equations of love that any logical reasons can be found. I am only here tonight because of you. You are all I am. You are all my reasons."

"Perhaps it is good to have a beautiful mind, but an even greater gift is to discover a beautiful heart."

The Village:"The world moves for love. It kneels before it in awe."

City of Angels: "I would rather have had one breath of her hair, one kiss from her mouth, one touch of her hand, than eternity without it."

"When they ask me what I liked best, I'll say it was you."

Hope Floats: "Dancing is just a conversation between two people. Talk to me."

Moulin Rouge: "The greatest thing you'll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return."

Big Fish: "Sometimes, the only way to catch an uncatchable woman is to offer her a wedding ring."

The Notebook: "The best love is the kind that awakens the soul and makes us reach for more, that plants a fire in our hearts and brings peace to our minds and that's what you've given me."

"I am nothing special; just a common man with common thoughts, and I've led a common life. There are no monuments dedicated to me, and my name will soon be forgotten. But in one respect I have succeeded as gloriously as anyone who's ever lived: I've loved another with all my heart and soul and to me, this has always been enough."

Sleepless In Seattle:"Well, it was a million tiny little things that, when you add them all up, they meant that we were supposed to be together.....and I knew it. I knew it the very first time I touched her. It was like coming home.....only to no home I'd ever known. I was just taking her hand to help her out of a car and I knew. It was like.....magic."

Notting Hill: "I am just a girl standing in front of a boy asking him to love her."

West Side Story: "Goodnight, goodnight, sleep well and when you dream, dream of me..."

The Last of the Mohicans:"You be strong, you survive....You stay alive, no matter what occurs! I will find you. No matter how long it takes, no matter how far, I will find you."

Sweet Home Alabama: "What do you want to marry me for, anyhow?"
"So I can kiss you anytime I want."

8 Months Old

*I love that keeping this blog has allowed me to keep track of my family's milestones and fun events so easily. I feel bad that when Kendle was a baby I did not record much about her day to day life. But hopefully, now I'm making up for it, and I'm glad I've been able to keep a note of Morgan's little life from the very beginning.*

This little hunk of love is 8 months old this week!!!!! Can you believe it?

My little chubber-oo loves bath time now. He likes to get his mom soaked with his splashing. At this stage in his life he's trying to be really independant by crawling everywhere he can and has been pulling himself up on the furniture and trying to balance on his own. He thinks he's ready for real food, but he doesn't have any little chompers yet. So I guess he's just swallowing all those cheerios?

He loves to clap, yell, pinch, wrestle and lay upside down. When I try to get him to say "momma" he gets a twinkle in his eye and says "da-da". It totally cracks me up. But when he's sad or hungry, he's all about the "ma-ma-ma-ma". Anytime music comes on, he starts rocking to the beat and clapping his hands.

I couldn't ask for a sweeter, happier baby.

Exciting News

Congrats to my little sis for officially being accepted to Oregon State University! They are lucky to have her and those college boys better watch out. By that I mean stay away from my little sis, or I will make the 4 hour drive and hunt you down. Seriously. I can make it there in 3 1/2 on a good day. Don't test me.

I'm so proud of you Tam!

Boy Crazy

There have been times since Kendle was born, that I have had to seriously ask myself why I of all people was given this particular little girl to mother. From a very young age her persona was that of a stubborn, strong willed, hilarious little girl. She has always acted so much older than she really is, not because she wants to do what all of the older kids are doing, but because her little mind goes a million miles a minute. Before she was even two years old, I could hold real conversations with her and this has often led me to forget to treat her age appropriately and not hold her to a higher standard of someone twice her age. She GETS things. Sometimes it's really exhausting for me to deal with her endless questions and curiosity. She has always done everything early. Walked, talked, potty trained - you name it. I'm not saying this to brag at all. It's just a part of who she is. So why should it come as any surprise to me to find out that she is already boy crazy and kind of has a little boyfriend. We'll call him "B."

"B" made her a snowflake during their craft time in kindergarten last week. She kept admiring it all afternoon and then decided to make him a little card in return. It said "I like you, do you like me?". So I told her that I didn't want her giving it to him and a huge battle ensued. Yesterday she came home from school and was sad because "B" had not been there. Last night she kept buggging me to paint her fingernails (which I very rarely allow) and then after Riley tucked her into bed she mentioned to him, "B will just think my fingernails look so pretty". Seriously, I did not expect to be having these issues until she was a middle schooler at least. I've tried to talk with her and tell her that little boys and girls need to only be friends and that she should focus more time on playing with her girl friends at recess. Now with Valentine's Day coming up, I'm just afraid she's going to go overboard with the whole "I like B" thing. This little girl is seriously going to make me go gray before my time, and I can tell it's going to be a long bumpy road ahead.

A long but very worthwhile trip

This last Sunday our family was lucky enough to be able to attend my new neice's blessing. We left Friday afternoon to travel a good eight hours, half of it in the pounding rain, to be with our family for the occasion. We managed to only stop one time on the way down and it really wasn't that bad of a trip. The kiddies were excellent in the car and didn't make a fuss. We stayed in North Bend,OR which is about half an hour from Coquille where my brother and his family live. Saturday we were able to head to Coquille and see baby Moira and catch up on some visiting. She is such a doll and just a little cuddle bug. It was hard for me to give her up for someone else to hold, especially as I was watching my little man crawling around like a speedracer and wondering where in the heck MY little baby went.

That night we headed to Rich and Deb's ward building for a family dinner and to let the kids run around with their cousins in the gym. Kendle is one lucky little girl to have such fun cousins her age and they really are good little friends. The highlight of their night was finding a wheelchair and racing up and down the hall in it. Those crazy rascals.

*Side note*: Did I mention that it did not stop raining the entire time we were in southern Oregon? Not just sprinkling, pouring down buckets! The bottom of Kendle's pants were constantly soaked. And no one wears rain gear there. My sister-in-law told me that's how they pick out the tourists.

Sunday morning we arrived at the church and sat with our family, and as I looked around at everyone seated together I realized how important my family is to me. As I listened to my brother give a beautiful blessing for his daughter, and witnessed my husband and the other men in our family gather around that precious new being I wanted to lock that memory away in my memory safe. Not to be cheesy, but the line "I always want to be, with my own family" from "Families Can Be Together Forever", kept running through my mind and I couldn't be more thankful for the good people who surround me in my life. My grandfather got up and bore his testimony about just doing the simple things in life to be happy and just doing your best. It was a good sacrament meeting. Check out this picture of little Moira in her white dress from Debbie's blog:

Afterwards we headed back to Rich and Deb's to change clothes and grab a quick bite to eat before we hit the road again. It's hard to say goodbye to those guys because they live so far away and we never know when we are going to get to see them again. I'm crossing my fingers that a location closer to us is in need of a new district attorney soon. My little sis rode home with us, so that was a nice change to have someone else to help keep the little ones entertained and side with me on what music to listen too. We were all very tired and the ride home seemed like it took forever. When we came over the hill into Kennewick I told Riley that I think we really do live in one of the best places in the world. Our little slice of heaven might not look like much to many other people, but to us there's no where else we'd rather be. It's good to be home.

Oh yeah, and it rained today. Afterwards though there was the most beautiful rainbow...............

Birthday Boy

My husband Riley turned 27 yesterday and for the next two months I get to enjoy the fact that we are the same age, even if it is only for a short time. We were traveling (more about that in a later post) all day and most of last night and were not able to celebrate or even have cake for him, so that will be happening later this week. A belated birthday is better than no birthday I suppose. He's a pretty good sport about things like that.

Since Riley is a huge Johnny Cash fan (I still have not quite figured that one out) I'm honoring his passion by playing a few Johnny Cash songs on my playlist. Please forgive me.

Here are some random facts that you may not know about Riley:
-He has a secret (or not so secret) crush on Jennifer Garner and will watch any chick flick with her in it.
-He loves to read
-He is secure enough in his manhood to admit that he has read all of the Harry Potter books and just finished the Twilight series as well.
-Give him five minutes and he can become best friends with anyone
-He is an awesome coach not only because of the effort he puts in to improve his players' skills, but also that he takes a personal interest in them as individuals and wants to see them do good in life and be good young men.
-He is a loyal friend and stays in touch way better than I do with old aquaintances.
- He is very competitive and does not like to lose, you might not want to play board games with him.
-His eyes change from green to blue depending on what he is wearing
-He loves Oreo cookie ice cream
-His favorite cake is yellow cake with chocolate frosting, even though he claims he does not really like chocolate. He would rather I leave out the choc. chips when I make cookies. Does that make sense to anyone else?
-He HATES onions
-He should have gone into sports broadcasting because he basically knows more about any sport than anyone else I've ever met. He remembers statistics and numbers like nobody's business. But yet, he can't remember to take the garbage out.(Ha, ha, just kidding Riley)
-He can't carry a tune to save his life, but it's really cute to watch him try
-He's a top-notch negotiator, I call them his weasel skills. They work on everyone but me.
-He bought a new car when we were dating to impress me. He'll tell you that he needed a new car anyways, but I know the truth.
-He spent almost thirty dollars at the fair one year trying to win Kendle a huge caterpillar. He would not give up until he got it, and then Kendle was scared of it and never played with it. Figures. But he really wanted to make her happy.

Most of all he's a good dad, good husband and has always done a wonderful job of taking care of our family.

Happy belated birthday Riley!!!!
