Random Thoughts On A Tuesday Morning

I'm having a giggling match with my little Morgan boy as I write this. Maybe my hair looks extra crazy this morning, I'm not sure, but boy is he laughing at me. He is a drool monster lately, he wants to chew on everything. He is a scooting machine in his walker as well. My pinkie toe took quite a beating yesterday from him slamming into me. This baby has some major determination. If he gets stuck or runs into a wall, he will sit there grunting and pushing with all of his might. He's only 3 1/2 months! It's uncanny I tell you. My children are little stubborn machines on baby steroids.

Riley was looking all over the house for his cell phone this morning, which is not an unusual occurrence. He misplaces things on a regular basis. Even though I have this handy little shelf in our kitchen for him to put all of his things, it's impossible for him to put them there. So we're calling his phone and calling and calling and all we can here is the tiniest ring. Is it in our bedroom? Under the cushions of the couch? No, it was left outside all night on our patio table. He mowed the lawn last night and must have left it out there. Good grief. Does anyone else know what I'm talking about?

Kendle is really bored in school and the homework she was sent home with last night is a joke, so I'm basically doing school with her on my own time. I was wondering if anyone has some good suggestions for some beginning reading books. When I was little they had those old "Dick and Jane" books, but I haven't really found anything similar. I would love to know some of the books you're children learned to read from. She can read simple words and sentences, so anything along those lines. It's just so frustrating to see her come home so dejected and negative, and then I start teaching her some simple math and she gets so excited to be learning something new. Makes me wonder how many other kids in her class feel the same way. This is going to be a long school year. On a better note though, Kendle is going to be singing "Tomorrow" from Annie in their primary talent show activity on Saturday and she is pretty excited about it. We've been practicing and practicing and I hope she won't chicken out in front of all of the other kids. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed.

Enjoy your Tuesday!

Zack I think is a little bored with parts of school too. He talks about riding the bus, eating lunch, and recess, but when you ask him if he learned anything new the answer is almost always "no". I've actually been going in on Mondays and volunteering for an hour or so and most of the kids seem to already know their alphabet and numbers, so I'm hoping the teacher is just "reviewing" for the first few weeks and seeing where the kids are. It really looked to me like most of them were ready to move on from tracing letters/numbers etc... I think all but 2 of the kids in his class can already write their name legibly and I would guess most of them can write the alphabet/#s etc.

Probably wouldn't hurt to schedule a conference with Kendle's teacher or at least e-mail her just to let her know how bored Kendle is...

You'll have to tape her performance and post it on here!

I love hearing your life in story mode! Riley losing his phone is like me. I'm always looking for it! Glad he found it outside. Luckily it didn't rain last night!

I'm with Debbie. I would talk to Kendle's teacher and see what else there is that she can do at school! Ask her about the AR books at the library. They bring them home and read them, then they can take a test on the computer at the school. Also ask her about what books she can check out from the library that will help her learn to read better. The public library has a ton of books for Beginner Readers too! Good luck!

Zack has kind of started reading Dr. Seuss Beginning Readers... Ten Apples Up On Top, One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish...stuff like that.

I agree that Dr. Seuss books are awesome for beginner readers. My mom and I did find some Dick and Jane books at Target last Christmas, and they are definitely great. Try amazon, you can find anything on there. Just type in beginner reading books, I'm sure a ton will come up and for dirt cheap too.

Reading about Riley misplacing his cell phone was like de ja vu. Spencer loses everything! Ya know, the keys that could easily hang on our key rack? Nope, they wouldn't go there. We need to have a fun hide and seek game with them several times a week. Love it.

Hannah found a lot of Dick and Jane books in the school library. Have you checked the public library also? My sister in law swears by "Teach your child to read in 100 lessons" I think it's about 20 dollars, but it has an activity once a day for 100 days. Her daughter had it down and was reading by 4 1/2, but now the problem is that she's in Kindergarten and is way ahead of her classmates. So she is working with her at home. Oh, one more, have you ever checked out Starfall.com? They have great reading activities and games online for beginning readers. Each of my kids love this site!

Ohhh I am so sad that we will not be going to the Primary Talent show. I would love to hear Kendle sing that song it is one of my all time favorites. Dylan came home from church and told us that he was going to sing while his Dad played the guitar. I hit the floor laughing.... his Dad does not play the guitar. Poor Dylan. I am having the same problem with Dylan and school. He tells me that all they do is play. I decided that sometime next week I will just drop in and see what they really do. He has not brought anything in the way of schoolwork or homework home. So frustrating because right now they are so excited to learn.

Kim, that's crazy that Dylan has not had any homework at all!

I bought the Dick and Jane books at Target a couple of years ago. maybe they still have them. Knowing Kendell she is probably way beyond Dick & Jane. You could probably start her on Harry Potter!

Ok, I'm laughing so hard at Kim's comment about Dylan wanting to sing while Dan plays the guitar! Too funny!! That is a classic!

Sarah-
the music is fantastic. I am somewhat embarrassed to say that I really like Legends of the Fall, the music and the setting are great. Of course Brad Pitt is hunky too, HA HA. Thanks for keeping us up to date on Tam, we don't get much news down this way.
