(Ok, I wish my backyard looked like that picture. Too bad my yard is about two feet wide and ten feet long!)
I love this time of year when I bring home new plants to spruce up my yard or put in pots. I'm excited for this spring because we FINALLY have all of our fencing, curbing, and rock done (only took us two years) and since all of that cost a lot of money, this year I need to only spend money on the fun stuff. YAY!!!
I love gladiolas, and last year I planted bright red ones all along my fence line where I could see them out of our dining nook window. They looked so pretty and cheered me up every time I looked at them. I also have planted quite a few hostas since they seem to do well in my backyard and I love their green foliage.
I also have a "disabled" tree in our backyard that I am thinking about replacing.
I wanted to pick people's brains a bit to see what plants you like, and what are some tried, true, and tested ones that thrive here in our area. Any suggestions or comments are welcome, even if you are an inexperienced gardener like myself.

Love tulips and in the summer for pots and hanging baskets Vinca. It's so cute and pretty hardy.
I need to learn more about gardening. I was totally going to go to the class this morning at Brooke's, but since I've got a baby throwing up, yeah, it didn't happen. Remember when I called you last year and asked you for advice on what to plant? Nothing really survived. I'm so bad with watering anything, and with this heat, everything died! Maybe this year will be better!
I am so not the person to give advice. Nothing "thrives" for me!
yours is a blog after my own heart.. love the photo and the pretty colors! It's a happy place around here!
If you have a north side planting bed.. I love Sweet woodruff... it smells like heaven.
I know exactly what you mean. I am so ready to get out in the dirt and plant something that I cannot stand it. Unfortunatley for me I am starting over with the whole putting in a yard thing and this year will consist of a lawn, curbing and rock. If I am lucky.
I wish my backyard looked like that one in the picture too. Good luck and happy planting!
I love Impatiens(sp?) I think they are so beautiful in the summer. My in laws always have a gorgeous yard. Us...um, not so much.
That picture is beautiful. I want that yard. I love the ornamental pear trees. They have 4 seasons of beauty. First is a rusty red color early spring, then white flowers, like popcorn, then green leaves all summer, then a brilliant red for fall. They are so easy to grow and the roots grow straight down so they do not invade like cement or make a bumpy grass etc. Show pics when done.
That's a picture of my back yard! (Before yesterday's storm that left a trail of damage across Melbourne)
